Emirates Airline History
Mr. Flanagan, the Director and General Manager of ‘Dnata’ started working on his ambition to launch an airline in 1985 with $10 million capital and two Boeing 727-200’s as gifts from the Sheikh. The flight network grew with traffic rights acquired from Karachi, New Delhi, Dhaka, Amman and Colombo. With heavy expansion costs and investment in the infrastructure, the Emirates Airlines bore heavy losses in 1986 for the only time in its history.
In 1993, The Emirates became the first airline to introduce telecommunications on an Airbus and by its 10th birthday in 1995, Emirates Airlines had a fully equipped Airbus fleet with an on-flight fax facility. The airlines expanded its airline destinations to Middle East, Europe and Africa including places such as Kenya and Nairobi, and flight training centers were introduced for pilots who wanted to forge careers with Emirates Airlines.
With the construction of a new terminal in 2000, the Emirates Airlines launched their ‘frequent flyer loyalty’ programs. Serving 22 million passengers in Dubai and buying six Boeing 777-300s, Emirates was voted, ‘Airline of the Year’. By 2003, the Emirates Airline signed the biggest deal in the civil aviation history, an order of 71 aircrafts at a cost of $19 billion. The Airlines, not only believed in superior customer care and air travel services but also became the number one choice for employees. With pilot training programs to New Engineering Centers, Emirates was termed as the number one civil aviation company in Dubai.
The Emirates Airline Group, in 2007 entered the hospitality industry with The Emirates Harbour & Residence and Marina Hotel becoming a reality. By 2009, Emirates decided to expand their airline operations to Sydney, Bangkok, Toronto and Durban. A conservation-based resort was opened in Australia which was the company’s first international project.
Currently, the Emirates Airlines is celebrating the unveiling of their 1000th Boeing 777 fleet. Dnata has acquired a major stake in the Travel Republic, a privately owned online travel agency which has the honor of representing some of the biggest airline transactions in the company’s history.
