The Ev-K2-CNR Chartered Association is an autonomous, non-profit association which promotes scientific and technological research in mountain areas mainly Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalayas. The association works through a network of national and international scientific collaborations, in particular with the Italian National Research Council. Besides, their aim is to further expand scientific knowledge, build research centers to support local scientists and promote development cooperation and to preserve mountain environments. Tripkar brings you information regarding the recent Glacier Cleanup Campaign conducted in Karakoram National Park:
Ev-K2-CNR conducted Glacier Cleanup Campaign in Central Karakoram National Park located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The aim was to create awareness among the locals as well as foreigners about the fragile mountain environment. The association sought importance to its cleanliness and their impact on regional and global weather conditions. With proper management and research, glaciers can be used as a vital water source. However, the trash and human waste discarded on mountains and glaciers are potentially degrading the quality of water that can be used for drinking by many adjoining villages that do not have access to clean water.
Ev-K2-CNR Association has been an active entity and a pioneer in conducting waste management programs. In collaboration with the Italian National Research Council the association has conducted various successful cleanup campaigns. With this green initiative, the team was able to remove 2700 kilograms of human waste and 600 kilograms of solid waste.
The Karakoram National Park is one of the most important national parks of Pakistan and has one of the largest glacial systems in the world. The glacier cleanup campaign is a great initiative to create awareness and promote biodiversity. With such initiatives, the association aims to support sustainable development in high altitude areas, improving environmental conservation and social development to support a better quality of life for locals.
